Julie Murray

Julie Murray is a classical musician and music teacher. With a BMus from Melba Conservatorium she has been a private and schools based instrumental teacher for the last 10 years, teaching people of all ages.

Everyone knows music is great for your brain, but increasing research confirms that actively making music is phenomenal for the developing brains of young children, from birth to 5 years old. Following the birth of her son, Julie has redirected her teaching interests and small business 'Sounds Like This' towards delivering Kodaly based early development classes. After intensive Kodaly training, Sounds Like This for Kids was born and Julie now runs classes in Frankston South, Karingal and Chelsea Heights.

Sounds Like This for Kids believes that children learn best through play and exploration. It is with that belief that Julie has developed her program whilst remaining flexible and tailoring the sessions to the students attending. She provides hands on experiences in all sessions through dance, movement and play. Julie believes that a child's best teacher is their parent(s), as such all of her Sounds Like This for Kids classes are parent/child sessions, encouraging parents to be musical and providing them with the tools to enhance their child's development every day.

Unlike many children's music classes, Sounds Like This for Kids is delivered without recorded accompaniment so that children can use the full range of their voices. They learn to actively listen, and all learn to sing within a range thats appropriate for them, without damaging their voices. We use tuned and untuned percussion and our bodies to explore beat, rhythm and timbre, as well as story telling and rhyme to enhance children's linguistic development and later literacy.
