A Fan Jacqueline Archer

I am a gold & silversmith who studied in Sydney at the College of the Arts & who always lived & worked in capital cities before moving to the Peninsula more than 10 years ago.

My art/exhibition work has always referenced women’s craft in its design & fabrication - mirroring through differing techniques the hours of painstaking work involved in these crafts i.e. lacemaking, tatting, embroidery etc ( women’s work which was never valued outside the home )
These repetitive metalworking techniques are of saw piercing, filing, soldering & engraving to achieve lightness & texture & of pickling (sterling silver) repeatedly to build up a soft fine silver finish on work that makes it more closely resemble textiles.

In contrast my production/wearable work has always reflected my surroundings; the urban landscape that once surrounded me in the city - of streamlined edges,of cogs & of the look of the machine made, engineered, precise & slick&, on moving to the Mornington Peninsula - the play of light on water, the vastness of bay & sky & by my growing passion for gardening.

I have found recently that the themes of women’s craft which I once expressed only in larger one off pieces have been sneaking into my more wearable work & the challenge for me is to mix those very labour intensive hand fabrication techniques which I love (mentioned above) with techniques such as casting to produce works that no longer requires 150 solder joins as the master does.

My work is now a melding of these old & new themes & influences & I find myself producing both industrially heavy looking & visually light pieces using a mixture of hand fabrication, casting & engineering techniques to realise my ideas.
I am a member of the gallery Cook Street Collective in Flinders & my jewellery can be viewed there or online at www.cookstreetcollective.com.au
